Help! Why have my microbladed eyebrows gone red?

Writer's picture: SamSam

Red eyebrows? Or perhaps you have green, blue, purple or grey eyebrows? I get at least one client a week come to see me for corrective work because they have discoloured eyebrows from previously done microblading (not by me). This is one too many! Please please please, when you are choosing an artist to tattoo your face, book a consultation where you can ask questions about the products they use. Ask to see healed photos, ask them how long they've been in the business, what training have they done, are they licensed and insured. Any skilled and knowledgeable artist who cares about their clients will welcome such questions and be happy to provide you with answers. Anyone who doesn't, my advice would be to get out quick!

So, what is the reason for discolouration, why does it happen? The main reason is because of incorrect needle depth (pigment has been implanted in the wrong layer of skin - too deep) and cheap pigments have been used. Other reasons can be due to sun exposure and chemicals applied to the area (e.g. face acids like retinol) but your artist should warn you about these, so they shouldn't be the cause of discolouration.

Discolouration can be corrected in most cases, but sometimes the only way to correct it is to remove the old pigment and start from scratch. If your chosen artist recommends a colour correction service, ensure they have knowledge of the colour wheel and actually use the appropriate colours to neutralise the unwanted colour, and don't just go over the old pigment in the same blonde/brown/black you started off with (as this will cause even more discolouration and major issues later on). I offer a free 30 minute no obligation consultation for anyone who is suffering from discoloured brows. Booking with someone who knows what they are doing and can be honest about the best course of action (even if it means the money doesn't go in their pocket) is so so important. Your artist should know which colours to use to cancel out the unwanted colours. For example, orange to fix grey, and olive to fix red, so on and so fourth.
